Groups wary of new carbon labels

Australian shoppers can now count the greenhouse emissions on a range of products to help in their buying decisions thanks to a new carbon reduction label being rolled out nationwide. The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) has welcomed the latest addition to supermarket shelves but consumer advocate group Choice has warned the labels could spark confusion and guilt shoppers into enforcing self-imposed “daily carbon allowances”.

Mining crucial to NSW economy, so tidy up laws: council

The NSW Minerals Council said the State Government’s $1.3 billion deficit announced in the 2009-10 budget this week would have been double that amount if $1.4 billion-worth royalty payments from the mining industry weren’t factored into the state’s bottom-line. The council used the budget figures to thrust forward its oft-repeated need: a more hassle-free planning and regulation system for its sector.

Low carbon jobs outpacing high-emitting sector jobs in EU

Green jobs have overtaken jobs in traditional high-emitting sectors in the EU, with 3.4 million jobs directly resulting from the development of the renewable energy, sustainable transport and energy efficiency related goods and services sectors – such as solar cell manufacturing work or in biofuel production. A further 5 million jobs are being created indirectly as a result of the growth of these industries, says WWF.

CleanTech: What does US policy mean for Aussie players?

New US climate policy aims to put a nationwide price on carbon, which should improve the economics of renewable and low emissions power generation (including gas fired power). This could create a large and lucrative market for Australian cleantech companies, including those that already have assets in the US and those with emerging technologies, writes Jo Hume of CVC Sustainable Investments.
