CleanTech: NT makes way for tidal energy


Darwin-based Tenax Energy plans to progress a tidal energy project worth up to $500 million in the Clarence Strait between the Northern Territory mainland and the Tiwi Islands. The first site will have a 200MW potential, matching the profile of the NT grid. Tenax claims the project has the potential, over time, for an installed capacity of 455MW.

Vic seeks water from hot stones


A team of RMIT University researchers are looking to jointly provide clean energy while tackling Australia’s ongoing issues with drought, developing an all-in-one geothermal system that can produce power and water at the same time. The $1.12 million research project, conducted with industry partner Greenearth Energy, was launched yesterday by Victorian Energy and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor, who also announced funding to help map the state’s geothermal hotspots.

The worldwide market for e-waste recovery, fuelled by Europe’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, is set to almost treble in the next four years, according to a new study. The combined impact of the global economic recovery and strengthening e-waste recycling legislation worldwide will drive improved recycling and recovery rates in each of the next five years.

Terminating the CFL problem


The key to increasing recovery of potentially damaging compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) is ramping up the number and accessibility of bins in drop-off centres, says a new study by the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) in Perth. In 2009 if got funding for a study and trial to extend the collection and recycling of CFLs, ahead of the national ban on incandescent in November 2009.

Brumby flags landfill levy hike for Vic


The Victorian Government has committed to setting higher landfill levies and making “significant changes to how waste is managed” in 2010, although details on just how far the levy will rise are yet to be released. A significant hike to $30-50 has previously been speculated by industry insiders, but the true scale of the increase will not be known until Premier John Brumby releases the state’s Jobs for the Future Strategy.
