Civil engineer Steve Posselt has just returned from an 860-kilometre kayak journey to raise awareness about the damage that will be caused by the Queensland Government’s proposed Traveston Crossing Dam near Gympie. The dam is the worst option the government could have chosen and will not provide enough water for Brisbane residents, Posselt said.

Budget mostly welcomed by environment industry


Budget commitments such as the $500 million Renewable Energy Fund and the $90 Green Building Fund have received positive feedback but organisations such as the Climate Institute and the Australian Conservation Foundation said the Federal Government should have gone further by cutting tax subsidies for polluting activities such as car use.

Rio Tinto Alcan has warned it may have to close its aluminium smelter if New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) goes ahead in its current form. Global carbon market doubled in 2007: report


The global carbon market grew to US$64 billion ($68 billion) in 2007, more than double the value in 2006, according to a new report from the World Bank. However, market volumes traded under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in developing countries was about level compared to 2006.
