Aldi slammed for ‘HFC-rich’ tyre inflator

Supermarket chain Aldi has put on sale an ‘emergency tyre inflator’ that is allegedly the first product in Australia to use as a propellant the ozone depleting and global warming gas commonly known as R-22. Green Cooling Association executive director Brent Hoare said the gas was being phased out globally, but Aldi was exploiting a loophole for aerosol applications.

Anaeco running low on funds for stage 2 AWT project

In February advanced waste treatment (AWT) company AnaeCo was very upbeat about its current and future prospects, stating it was “expecting to break ground on stage 2 of its DiCOM AWT plant in Perth by November this year”. It’s not backing away from that timeline, but the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) has written to it expressing concern over its cash burn in the last six months.

A ‘carbon default’ scenario occurring in Australia, US: HSBC

The global market for low-carbon energy and efficiency projects most likely won’t benefit from a US cap-and-trade program any time in the next decade, according to a report by HSBC. The bank also predicts low-carbon vehicles, such as electric cars, will be a bigger global market by 2020 than renewable energy, such as wind and solar power.

Business leaders put forward 23 reasons for an ETS

New National Business Leaders Forum on Sustainable Development chairman Rod Leaver has urged other business leaders to join the call for a price on carbon by recommending 23 actions to the next national government. In his first act as chairman of the NBLF, the Lend Lease Australia CEO said “Australian business needs certainty to continue to invest and develop our economy”.

EU 20% energy efficiency target discussions scaled up

EU energy ministers met this week for informal discussions that will shed light on their positions related to the EU's upcoming energy efficiency action plan. The two-day meeting, which started on September 6, will concentrate on protecting energy consumers, while the next day was dedicated to energy infrastructure. On the second day, ministers also discussed energy efficiency at a behind-closed-doors lunch.

Sydney’s new water plan to save 145GL of water by 2015

The NSW Government has released its 2010 Metropolitan Water Plan, which would see close to 25% of greater Sydney's potable and non-potable water needs be met through desalination and recycling by 2015. Currently, greater Sydney uses about 33GL of recycled water, but by 2015 it should aim to use 70GL, according to the study.

New research partnership for clean coal

Australian company Clean Global Energy has entered into agreements with Australian and US based universities to undertake further research into the technical and environmental applications of underground coal gasification (UCG) and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Clean Global Energy can produce syngas for use in heating, power generation and the production of chemicals, fertiliser, ultra-clean diesel and aviation fuels.

US cars to get green labelled in 2012

The US EPA and the US Department of Transport (DOT) will unveil on Monday a draft car-labelling scheme detailing for the first time their greenhouse emissions. The compulsory labels would include a bar code that potential buyers can scan with their smart phones for instant access to all the relevant information, including a new measurements of fuel economy.

Yarra Valley Water pours $180 million into water network

Yarra Valley Water invested over $180 million in major infrastructure during the 2009/10 financial year to ensure its water and sewerage network continues to meet demand in Melbourne. Seven projects were completed over the financial year, says its annual report, including the $8 million Craigieburn Aurora Transfer Scheme.

WA’s Direction 2031 plan welcomed with caution by key groups

WA Planning Minister John Day has release a new planning vision and direction for Perth and the surrounding Peel region in response to expectations that WA's population will pass 2.2 million by 2031. The WA Sustainable Energy Association (WA SEA) welcomed the blueprint but the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) said it has already found holes in it.

SKM strengthens the PVC recycling sector

Vinyl Cycle, the Australian PVC industry’s voluntary post-consumer bottle recycling initiative, has teamed up with SKM Recycling (SKM) to recover PVC cordial bottles from kerbside municipal waste. Under the contract, SKM will deliver a minimum of 80 tonnes of PVC bottles – or over 1.5 million PVC cordial bottles a year. The first shipment of 24 tonnes of recovered PVC bottles has been delivered to Vinyl Cycle’s PVC recycler in Geelong.

Business group wants next PM to deliver a ‘green economy’

Environment Business Australia (EBA) has put forward six key climate change recommendations to the Independents and the Greens in the midst of heated negotiations with the two major parties. Interestingly, one of the six points calls on the Federal Government to adopt similar climate policies to those put on the table by new UK Prime Minister David Cameron, including “creating a pooled index fund, climate bonds, and/or a Green Investment Bank”.

Building a six star Green Star Ark

The Ark building in North Sydney is set to recycle up to 3ML of water annually thanks to its greywater recycling plant. Completed in May, it represents the first high-rise commercial building to achieve 6 Star Green Star V2 Design rating in NSW thanks to its greywater recycling plant developed by water recycling company Aquacell.

A time for new leadership

In the lead up to the federal election many of us were left feeling the major parties had tried to say as little as possible about the significance of the task before us in relation to climate change: the level of effort required to keep global warming below a 2–3 degree C rise and the global consequences even if we do. Greens election swing attributed to delay of CPRS

Some 32% of Green voters in 30 key marginal seats across Australia said they would have voted Labor if it had not delayed the introduction of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), according to a poll for The Climate Institute released today. Part of the institute’s ‘Climate of the Nation’ report, is says this alone could have cost Labor two seats.

Dimension Data, a specialist IT services and solution provider, has launched its e-waste management service, a program that offers environmentally-responsible removal, disposal and recycling of electronics materials ranging from packaging for new products to equipment at end-of-life. The greening of Australian politics

The three rural independent MPs who hold the key to who will be Australia’s next Prime Minister, along with incoming Greens MP and independent Andrew Wilkie, met yesterday to discuss whether action on climate change should be a condition of any king-making deal with Labor or the Coalition. Wilkie and Greens MP Adam Bandt did not take part in the meeting, but are also said to be weighing up their options.

Better Place extends EV battery trial period

California-based electric vehicle battery manufacturer, Better Place, has extended its switchable-battery electric vehicle (EV) taxi pilot in Tokyo to operate through the end of the year. The pilot project began on April 26, in cooperation with Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo’s largest taxi operator, and focuses on the feasibility of battery switch as means for taxis to have instant, zero emission, range extension.
