New research partnership for clean coal

Australian company Clean Global Energy has entered into agreements with Australian and US based universities to undertake further research into the technical and environmental applications of underground coal gasification (UCG) and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Clean Global Energy can produce syngas for use in heating, power generation and the production of chemicals, fertiliser, ultra-clean diesel and aviation fuels.

WA’s Direction 2031 plan welcomed with caution by key groups

WA Planning Minister John Day has release a new planning vision and direction for Perth and the surrounding Peel region in response to expectations that WA's population will pass 2.2 million by 2031. The WA Sustainable Energy Association (WA SEA) welcomed the blueprint but the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) said it has already found holes in it.

Business group wants next PM to deliver a ‘green economy’

Environment Business Australia (EBA) has put forward six key climate change recommendations to the Independents and the Greens in the midst of heated negotiations with the two major parties. Interestingly, one of the six points calls on the Federal Government to adopt similar climate policies to those put on the table by new UK Prime Minister David Cameron, including “creating a pooled index fund, climate bonds, and/or a Green Investment Bank”.

Building a six star Green Star Ark

The Ark building in North Sydney is set to recycle up to 3ML of water annually thanks to its greywater recycling plant. Completed in May, it represents the first high-rise commercial building to achieve 6 Star Green Star V2 Design rating in NSW thanks to its greywater recycling plant developed by water recycling company Aquacell.

Supply chain transparency gets a turbo boost

An open source database of life cycle assessment (LCA) data from the US is being upgraded by a group of 10 global companies and consultancies and the US EPA. The new version of the Earthster supply chain transparency system, called ‘E2 Turbo’, will provide cost-effective LCAs to help companies and governments better understand and work with their supply chain.

Toy companies score lowest in latest Climate Counts scorecard

AstraZeneca, Whirlpool and Hasbro are the leaders in their product sectors, according to the latest
Climate Counts
scorecard, which ranks companies on their actions to address climate change. The rankings of leading US companies in four sectors shows they are continuing to improve their climate commitment, but their pace is far slower than required to meet the climate challenge.

Global 500 better at reporting emissions in transport sector

The global transport industry could have a major long-term impact on climate change and world energy usage if strategic investments are not made, says research by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). Consumers seeking cheaper, and ‘resilient’ green products: study

Australians generate about 690kg of waste per year per person, making them the second highest generators of household waste behind the US, according to independent business analyst Datamonitor. The good news is that more Australians are recycling household waste on a constant basis, with the report noting “69% of Australian consumers ‘always’ recycle household waste such as glass, paper and plastics, while a further 20% ‘often’ do so”.

An election climate policy tale of balloons, numbers and stars

Just days away from the election the Australian Conservation Foundation’s (ACF) scorecard of environmental policies shows both major parties have failed to offer credible policy packages on climate change. Meanwhile, policies delivered by the Greens have been well received not only by the ACF but also by The Climate Institute and the Energy Efficiency Council, which also decided to show their own graphs in terms of what they think of the main parties environmental policies.

Earth to overshoot its annual ecological limit this week

Veolia’s green record still positive, despite emissions rise

The Australian business of multi-utility Veolia has lifted environmental performance across its water and transport services, though its environmental services area saw mixed results. Across the group CO2 emissions increased 18% compared to 2008 courtesy of “an increase in the environmental services we provide for the public and private sectors”.

Greens launch $5b for renewable energy projects

The Greens yesterday called for $5 billion worth of loan guarantees for large-scale renewable energy developments, along with an enhanced renewable energy target, a grant scheme and a federal feed-in tariff to move transform Australia into a 100% renewable energy powerhouse. Calls for more corporate carbon footprinting in Victoria

Victoria business has been slow to adopt carbon footprinting, shows a study by the Global Sustainability research centre at RMIT, which identified four key requirements to reverse the trend. Labor targets green manufacturing with Clean 21

AGIC’s sustainability rating scheme flows on

The Australian Green Infrastructure Council (AGIC) has welcomed the Federal Government’s injection of $500,000 to help get up its sustainability-rating scheme for infrastructure. Much like the ratings tool for buildings, the scheme covers seven major categories: project management and governance, economic performance, resources, emissions, pollution and waste, biodiversity, and finally people and place and workforce.

EU foresees surge of trillion-dollar biodiversity business market

Greens plan to unplug Melbourne

The Greens want to repower Melbourne with renewable energy by the end of 2020 via a new plan released today by Adam Bandt, a candidate for the federal seat of Melbourne. It would see up to a third of the Melbourne CBD’s electricity needs still sourced from the grid, but the remaining 200 MW produced by large-scale renewable energy.

Kelloggs recalls 28 million toxic cereal boxes

Kellogg is recalling as many as 28 million boxes of cereal in the US because a chemical is leaching from the packaging into the cereal. The US Food and Drug Administration states the reason for the recall as "uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell coming from the liner in the package." The incident highlights a little-appreciated concern; while packaging can help food last longer, it can also leach chemicals into foods.
